MOBCI BIRD HABITAT RESTORATION GRANTS
MoBCI grant proposals are solicited, reviewed, and ranked by the MoBCI Grant Subcommittee. This team and the MoBCI Steering Committee offer recommendations to the Department of Conservation, which then completes the granting process. Grants up to $25,000 may be awarded.
Funded projects included those with multiple partners, targeted suites of priority bird species, and projects which address the objectives listed in one or more of the major national bird conservation initiatives (i.e., the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Partners in Flight, North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, and the Northern Bobwhite Conservation Initiative). Additional funding sources may be tapped to allow full funding for a variety of projects or an additional grant to be awarded from submitted proposals.
Selection criteria include the number of priority bird species addressed (15 points), priority habitats conserved (15 points), bird initiative plan goals and objectives addressed (15 points), partnerships developed (20 points), usefulness of the project as a model for other projects (10 points), capacity of the organization(s)/individual to accomplish the project (10 points), and budget (15 points).
Fiscal Year 2016
Columbia Audubon Society:
Grassland Restoration Project at Columbia Audubon and Bonnie View Nature Sanctuaries. $11,300
Grant funding will allow for the purchase of herbicide and native prairie seed, as well as operational costs of converting a fescue pasture in an urban park to a diverse native grassland. The project area consists of 13.5 acres owned by Columbia Audubon Society (CAS) and the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department (CP&R).
National Wild Turkey Federation:
Savanna and Open Woodland Restoration Project. $20,000
Funding will allow for the continuation of a successful private lands cost-share program that supports savanna and woodland restoration in Missouri and Iowa. All MoBCI dollars will be spent in Missouri.
The Nature Conservancy:
Grassland Management to Provide Habitat for Greater Prairie Chickens and other Grassland Birds at Dunn Ranch and Pawnee Prairie. $20,000
The purpose of this grant is to provide funding to improve the habitat for greater prairie chickens and other grassland dependent bird species by implementing the suggestions made by MDC’s Prairie Chicken Recovery Team for grazing and high mowing and clearing woody vegetation from approximately 71 acres of tallgrass prairie.
